What end sealing actually does

Capillaries at the end grain run straight into the fibre, so moisture leaves far faster there than through the face. That is why checks start at the ends.

Sealing does not stop drying — it slows the loss at the ends so the gradient between end and centre is gentler, and checking is reduced.
