Details
White oak (Quercus alba) is denser and harder than red oak. Its pores are blocked by tyloses, and quarter-sawn faces show pronounced ray fleck. The colour is an even greyish white, which suits natural and pale finishes.
Description: Sawn, kiln dried, calibrated and sized, with sealed ends. Because colour variation is smaller and the grain finer, it is normally supplied in A / AB grades. Quarter-sawn (ray fleck) material is sorted separately — please say so when enquiring.
Properties (at 12% MC):
- Specific gravity: approx. 0.68
- Average weight: approx. 769 kg/m³
- Average volumetric shrinkage (green to 6%): approx. 12.6%
- Modulus of elasticity: approx. 12,237 MPa
- Hardness: approx. 6,049 N
Why buy it:
- Even colour, so pale and natural finishes yield well;
- Dense and wear resistant — good for tops and treads;
- Can be sorted quarter-sawn for ray-fleck face material;
- Shrinkage is higher than red oak, so we hold a tighter moisture band before shipping.
Applications
Pale and natural finish furniture faces, table tops, doors and casings, stair treads, flooring face layers, cooperage and high-end trim.
